An Unforgettable Experience at Zafferano - Traditional Albanian Food and Hospitality.
This was our third day in Albania and our first real dinner out—and wow, what an experience! We showed up around 4 PM for an early meal, and the place was completely empty except for the chef and his friend watching a soccer game inside. There was nice jazz music playing. We decided to sit outside for some fresh air, and the chef brought us small menus. They were in English, but there were no descriptions or pictures, so we had no idea what we were actually ordering.
At first, we just pointed at items and asked, Good?—which got us a couple of recommendations. But eventually, we had to break out Google Translate to figure out the rest. There was no drink menu, but in a cool little moment, the chef called over a friend who happened to be walking by to help us out.
The food came out fast, and we quickly realized we had ordered way too much. Everything was delicious! The corn bruschetta was probably our least favorite, but the baked kackavall cheese was a hit! The Greek salad was super fresh, and the traditional casserole was different but really good. The chicken escalope came out last, but by that point, we were already stuffed. I also tried a Korça beer—refreshing and hoppy.
But the best part? The hospitality. The chef didn’t speak English, but he was so welcoming, always smiling, and even taught us a few Albanian words. And then there was Myzo—a local patron who made our night even better. He struck up a conversation, asked where we were from, and by the end of the meal, he was buying us shots of raki and local brandy. He even gave us a little lesson on Albanian culture and the raki-making process and filled our water bottle with raki to take home!
The generosity here was next level. It really says something about the restaurant and the people of Albania that this kind of experience happened here. We left feeling like we had found a home away from home—and a new friend to show us around.
Huge thanks to Zafferano for an unforgettable night! We even left just in time to see a rainbow outside 🌈
What a great family run restaurant. The mother cooks amazing, while the son is very hospitable and offers great service! They even showed us their hospitality by offering free dessert and sightseeing tips 10/10
